iPhone Release Date in South Africa

Postby foxinni on Tue Jul 15, 2008 9:36 am

When will the iphone finally be released or at least just announced for release? Rest assured though, iPhone Fan WILL have the release date news as soon as the 3G iphone is available for the consumers.

The iphone release date was set for mid to end of June 2008 in international countries. So hopefully we can have it over here in about three months from then. This is a very crude judgment and hopefully it will be here sooner that that. Cross your fingers.

Most sources indicate that the iPhone will be released 20 July , but you can expect it a bit later.......Hey i mean its South Africa . I really want to know if the 8 and 16 GB will be available in South Africa. And according to Apple the most Service Providers will be allowed to ask is $199 for the 8GB model and it will cost a bit more. Vodacom always needs to over charge.

Indeed. I mean thats like 4 days away. Unlikely that it will come that soon. I found this article over at FMTech.co.za, also claiming it will be out the 20th of July. http://www.fmtech.co.za/?p=10054

What I am more concerned about are the data plans associated with the iPhone. For years, as deprived as we were as a nation related to the Internet, we were EXTREMELY fortunate on mobile. Open networks with cheap data plans (very cheap by Int standards).

The greedy mobile operators globally have launched iPhone but with excessively high data plans, so when they say $199 for the unit, its completely untrue..... in real terms the device costs a lot more to the consumer. They really are riding on the back of the hype machine and screwing the consumer in the process.

In many cases operators now include a cost for the SMS bundle as well as an average of R150 extra a month on the cheapest data plan on top of what they were charging before. If you work out this over a two year period, the added profits are astronomical. If you couple this with the fact that Apple make more margin per device as the component costs have dropped and the revenue chunk they are getting from the operators, Apple and the operators end up screwing the consumer.

This is why I am watching with keen interest as to how the other mobile handset manufactures are going to react. At that point people will get sick of the Apple Kool Aid and land on earth (hopefully). :)

Let me put it into perspective.
I have been using my 2.5 G iphone for the last 8 months, non stop and While just checking mail
doig the occasional browse and a couple of internet apps, hecking fecesbook, etc etc

The second month my Data bill was over a Grand.
Whats more I use it primarily in areas where I have wifi, work and home. So inbetween work and home, at the occasional airport and every now and then.
That gets a bit scary.
So I have disabled the gprs access point until I need it then I enable it.

Yesterday I did the plunge and upgraded to 2.0firmware, worked ok unfortunately no installer app, but it did have cydia and app store where I loaded every free app I could. I like my apps but I am not quite ready to pay for them, so I used my aol account as my mac login and have not had to put any CC details in yet.

I did find that by default there is no internet GPRS setting, Wierd, so I did some research and found out we need to add a new "custom Internet Setting"
So when you have firmware 2.0 and cannot access edge, I set up a lttle site to hand out MTN and Vodacom settings to the iphone. http://wan.to/iphone

Its funny that, in the new update of Mac OS server they have created their OWN mime types in apache in order to deliver custom settings to iphones via web. using the extention .mobileconfig

I would like to se any other ZA users experiences with firmware 2.0

They just mailed me and said the phone has not been released for testing on the network yet. So looks like it could still be a while.
